The shortcut Ctrl+L still works though.

I have the opinion that every shortcut (or at least the main ones) should be referenced in the UI somehow.
This shortcut is mentioned in nautilus' shortcut dialog (which can be accessed via the app menu or Ctrl+?). I must admit that this dialog can be confusing, but I heard that there are plans to rebuild it for libadwaita.

also try thunar, it does this and when you start typing it does not start a search (which would freeze the entire app for me) but jumps to the first file with that starting letter. Nautilus is just ... special.
