Early in our relationship, my now-wife and I had a lengthy and oddly animated argument about the merits of the John Fogerty song "Centerfield." In retrospect, it was all about two young people who were rushing into a commitment that was (as it turns out) absolutely the right choice, but it was a pretty intense change and left us wanting to half-consciously set boundaries to make sure we stayed individuals. The argument itself never had that as anything other than subtext though, so it was just a stupid and and hilarious place to draw a line in the sand.

And for the record, if for no other reason than the opening bass riff, that song is a swamp-rock banger, the height of Fogerty's post-Creedence career, and makes every baseball game in the country slightly better because it might be played there.

My ex had this thing about beard trimmings. I shave daily and have fairly slow beard growth to begin with, so the trimmings are extremely small flecks.

Yes, I make an effort to rinse them down. No, I wasn’t always perfect. Yes, other people’s dead hair is kinda disgusting.

At one point she was sending passive aggressive pictures and demands to do better. Now the thing was, she had long hair. She would collect long strands that broke off and put them on the shower wall to keep it from going down the drain. She wouldn’t always remove said hair.

So I was frustrated at the whole double standard thing and saved up a few pictures of forgotten hairballs artistically arranged into smilies and stuff.

In the moment… it was a bad idea
