Bavaria's government said in a statement that it wants to "limit the public consumption of cannabis despite the federal government's dangerous legalization law.

"A family festival like the [Oktoberfest] and cannabis consumption don't go together," he said.

Fucking lol. At a festival where people routinely get sick drunk and fall out everywhere is concerned about being family friendly? Sounds more like they're jealous people can get inebriated without drinking alcohol.

Well it is Bavaria. I am guessing their view of what constitutes a family is the dad coming home drunk beating up his wife in front of the kids.

I've been in recovery for over 20 years now and one thing I've come to realize it's that .... I'd rather deal with an addict high on weed than an alcoholic that is blind drunk.

The dope head will want to be your friend and laugh uncontrollably.

The alcoholic will say you look funny and want to start a fist fight .... then piss their pants ... and cry .... and then want to fight again. And they'll do this regardless if you are 20, 60 or six years old.

No, it obviously is a family activity to get drunk together.

I am all for cannabis legalisation, and have fought for it for years, even though I don't like to consume it (only makes me sick..)

BUT: I have been a medic on the Oktoberfest for a decade and while these times are long gone, I absolutely support the ban there.

Here's why: First Alcohol and THC do not mix well. At all. In more than 20 years of emergency medicine I saw two THC overdoses - which were easy to handle. But high dose alcohol AND THC is a massive problem and will lead to people getting admitted to ICU for monitoring purpose as it is beyond what the (very advanced) medical services at the Oktoberfest can handle themselves. And ICU beds are in absolute short supply. So while alcohol is a problem and I wish the local government would put more pressure on the waiters to force them to refuse to deliver "the final Maß"(last beer) that pushes people over the edge, my former colleagues can easily handle that. But mixed-agent intoxication is a totally different beast. Don't get me wrong, Alcohol will be the main nox in these cases - but the combination is the problem.

Furthermore the Oktoberfest is crowded as hell. And there is literally zero chance that one is able to smoke without interfering with someone else - staff, other visitors, etc. And just like nicotine letting someone else co-consume without asking them for approval is inconsiderate as fuck - especially as there are drugs that do not mix well with THC, even more so even alcohol comes into play.

I've seen (and been) enough instances of someone going from "very drunk" to "completely fucked" as soon as they smoke weed that I'm inclined to agree.

They can go nicely together in reasonable doses, but if you get shit-faced drunk, weed is almost always going to make that worse.

Save the weed for the hangover.

Or, if you're not a dumb tourist who likes being scammed, don't go to the Oktoberfest.

[–] nikscha@feddit.de 16 points 7 months ago

100% right (I live in Munich) If you want the Oktoberfest experience without the obnoxious tourists, I recommend visiting the "Frühlingsfest". It's basically the same thing in the same place, but in Spring

[–] boonhet@lemm.ee 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Why not? I've always thought I'd like to go there once (and likely only once)

[–] trollercoaster@sh.itjust.works 19 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

It's a tourist trap with ridiculously inflated prices. If you want to experience genuine Bavarian beer culture, just visit any beer garden or any small town beer fest in Bavaria. At the Oktoberfest, you'll mainly experience lots of drunken tourists pissing and vomiting in places where you should do neither. Also they'll sell you one half filled glass of beer at a price you'd pay for many full ones any place else.

[–] boonhet@lemm.ee 3 points 7 months ago

Thank you! I'll try to visit a smaller festival one day instead, sounds a lot more fun.

[–] ian 2 points 7 months ago

Yes. Oktoberfest is enjoyable if you drink at a measured pace and avoid crowded weekends. Guzzling lots of beer quickly means you'll miss all the fun, and you could guzzle beer anywhere for less money. Adding cannabis to an already tricky evening will not help you enjoy the event. Security for families and visitors is already currently very tricky. They do an amazing job keeping it going as it is. I also like the Munich local village and town beerfests. No crowds, no problem getting tables, and lots of tradition. Sadly the Munich Spring beerfest now gets as crowded as the Oktoberfest. The Dachau beerfest needs reservations too. But the rest are great.

Does noone ever think of the children?

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 24 points 7 months ago (1 children)

So no snorting cocaine off of someone's dick anymore? Sad.

[–] spechter@lemmy.ml 0 points 7 months ago

That's tobacco

[–] DrSleepless@lemmy.world 22 points 7 months ago

Why not both?

[–] VirtualOdour@sh.itjust.works 20 points 7 months ago (1 children)

This is only to be expected, as is the inclusion of weed tents and smoking areas once they see it'll make them money.

People making money don't want things to change until it's clear they can make more money.

[–] Ravi@feddit.de 8 points 7 months ago

You underestimate the Bavarian politicians. It's not about the money (or reason), it's all about sending a message.

[–] uebquauntbez@feddit.de 11 points 7 months ago

Don't forget cannabis costs jobs. Breweries will go bankrupt. No delivery jobs, no selling beer in Tents, no waiters & waitresses, no tax paying, no fees, no fines ... and Bavaria is history. And all because everyone's bringing cannabis to Oktoberfest. /s

[–] AstridWipenaugh@lemmy.world 11 points 7 months ago (3 children)

I mean, that seems fair. It's a beer event. Like really a beer event. You can come and go as you please, so just go for a walk if you want to blaze.

It's a beer event. Like really a beer event.

https://oktoberfest.guide/tents

Weinzelt - translates as "wine tent". This tent offers a selection of more than 15 wines, as well as Weißbier.

They're doing it wrong!

[–] PhreakyByNature 8 points 7 months ago

Oktoberfest is also home to the "magic chicken" as we called it. Super salty so went with beer well but had magic hangover fighting abilities.

[–] geissi@feddit.de 15 points 7 months ago

It’s a beer event. Like really a beer event

That's just not true.
It started as a celebration of the wedding of the crown prince and has since become a generic festival.
They serve food, snacks, wine, nonalcoholic drinks and have rides for children who are not allowed to drink beer.

[–] UpperBroccoli@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 7 months ago

If that is true, how do you explain Hofbräu being served there? That is clearly not beer.

[–] JoYo@lemmy.ml 6 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

lol dont act like you haven’t been cross faded this whole time, bavaria.

[–] zakobjoa@lemmy.world 6 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Context: Bavaria is our Texas.

[–] mojo_raisin@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago

Wait for Oktokerfest

[–] s_s@lemm.ee 3 points 7 months ago

I can't think of anything more strict or traditional to come out of Bavaria...

I, for one, willkommen our 4th20 Reich

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Authorities in Germany's southeastern state of Bavaria announced on Tuesday that they will ban smoking cannabis at the popular Oktoberfest beer festival in Munich.

Cannabis consumption would be banned in beer gardens, at public festivals and on restaurant terraces if the plan comes into effect.

Clemens Baumgärtner, the head of Oktoberfest, told the web.de news portal he wanted to keep the festival cannabis-free.

"Bavaria is strengthening the protection of children and young people," said Bavarian Premier Markus Söder, also of the CSU.

"Our aim is to limit cannabis consumption in public spaces," said Bavarian Health Minister Judith Gerlach.

In Germany, adults over 18 are allowed to carry 25 grams of dried cannabis and keep up to three marijuana plants at home for personal use.
