Can this thing even play games on the road or is it just meant to be some fancy handheld to be used only on wifi?

Bought one and installed ChimeraOS on it. Makes it more into a steamdeck than a laptop without a keyboard.

I think getting a steamdeck is a better option, unless you really really want to play some demanding games. Setting up TDP controls and some other features you might want from a console makes having some linux knowledge a enormous help.
