I grew up thinking the US and USSR were going to blow up the world at any minute. Then I thought we'd be OK. Now, I'm back to thinking the world might blow up any minute, again. So yes, this could have a lasting effect on children.
If it's any consolation (it's not) it won't blow up, it'll just steadily get worse.
That has been my experience so far but things seem to be accelerating.
