I still don't get why Temu is so popular... Sure everything is like $0.49, but it's all junk that is either already broken when it arrives or will break within a week of using it if it works at all. What's the point?

The app is designed like TikTok + scammy ad type deals + gambling. You are supposed to get addicted to using it, not to buy the things you want

Ah, you just described average chinese ecommerce app. Fuckloads of ads, check-ins, roulette and sometimes straight up prompting fishy microcredit deals. They even put live streaming into food service app, some merchants in meituan(chinese uber eat) has a popup of live stream when you enter their page... Chinese apps are just TERRIBLE.
