What did they have before? Yould think this was required infrastructure.

It was never a priority when a lot of these stations were built, and retro fitting toilets underground will be an expensive project.

I don't recall during a holiday when I was there, but have heard some parts smell because people relieve themselves in the station? Or was that new York?

Yeah there is a problem with public urination in London, probably related to the lack of public toilets (and the stupid closing times of those that remain). I don't really notice the smell in most places though, London has a strong city smell anyway.

The tube has that dusty smell that also smells like stale air, and then you feel air rushing at you thirty seconds before the train arrives.
