...because removing somebody's kernel maintainer priv and the industrialised genocide of people is remotely comparable.

That sounds like policy written by somebody who has no idea what the reality of software development is.

1 year to rewrite critical software in a new language?

I don't know, but given that forces involved are on the molecular level, I suspect those are driven by the kinetic energy of particles in a fluid (i.e. heat) and that there's a very slight cooling going on.

This sounds like a scapegoat.

Not the west. The global community.

...and should Israel be under sanctions? Absolutely.

It was a death sentence leaving NK. They were never going to be allowed back in to tell others of the outside world. The only question was how long they'd last.

personally i don't agree with sanctioning foss communities.

Foss communities aren't being sanctioned. Whole countries are. It's the same limitation whatever enterprise you're in.

If Olympians have to renounce their country to take part in global competition, why do you not think a software developer wouldn't have to do the same to be involved in a global project?

Web search was a solved problem before LLMs. All the providers lobotomized their tools as a sacrifice to the god of advertising. LLMs have then been applied and it made the situation worse as now you have hallucinations to contend with.

Can we please go back to straight search?

Governments see inflation as a way of making things cheaper in real terms. Public sector wages should be index linked IMHO, but I'm always told that to do so would be "inflationary". To put that another way - Not giving people real-terms pay cuts is, apparently, a driver of inflation.

Economists have built a system which relies on the buying power of the workers going down.
