So the mug is the best choice by far, due to its universe-breaking abilities surrounding temperature. Setup a Stirling engine on that for infinite power.

I do have to admit it's a bit disheartening to post that pic, and then people react to it by looking how to use the objects to 'hack' the nature of reality.

[–] Isoprenoid@programming.dev 106 points 10 months ago (1 children)

OP: "Hey, guys! Here are some objects that hack the nature of reality."

Posters: *Uses them to further hack the nature of reality, just in other ways*

OP:

[–] antonim@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Kind of, lol. But you can see the difference in the type of hacking. The objects are only meant to hack your own, private reality. That's what the picture is meant to address, that aspect of our lives that can't be translated into external and/or mechanical utility.

Besides, the issue of energy scarcity that the replies are working off could be fixed or at least minimised through realistic technological and political/economic solutions, with no need for magical objects that defy the laws of physics. But no law or real invention can be guaranteed e.g. to give you good dreams.

The objects are only meant to hack your own, private reality.

So they induce a kind of psychosis? Ah, sweet. Man-made horrors beyond my comprehension. 😜

I mean, that magic candle single handedly gives hope for reversing universal entropy. Everything else might be personally fulfilling but that thing could be the key to preventing the heat death of the universe.

Which would be pretty personally fulfilling too imo.

mein freund, some of us prefer to focus on extracting the most material value out of these hypothetical objects, simply because we want to. it's fun to imagine the possibilities with the infinite energy from the candle and the mug.

I agree. And thank you for the heartwarming content ❤️

I dont know how much energy you'd get per hour from a hot mug though. I'm much more intrigued by a blanket that would keep you safe in the arctic as well as the Sahara.

[–] Godort@lemm.ee 33 points 10 months ago (3 children)

It depends on how you define the words "drink" and "warm". If "drink" includes something like molten tungsten, and "warm" includes 6200F then you can get a bunch of energy out of it

[–] Linuto@lemmy.world 18 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (2 children)

I did not consider a 6200F heavy metal to be a hot drink.

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 9 points 10 months ago

Jeez I dunno if we could get it any hotter for you, sorry

Drinks tend to be drinkable.

[–] Daxter101@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 10 months ago

Everything is drinkable. Once.

[–] alx@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 10 months ago (1 children)

All liquids are drinkable at least once

[–] SkepticalButOpenMinded@lemmy.ca 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Not all liquid moving near the throat is drinking. Drowning, for example, isn’t drinking. It has to be ingested using swallowing muscles, etc. Molten lava would disintegrate the perimeter of your mouth and throat. That’s “drinking” like a shotgun to the face is “eating”.

They need to buff the candle. Stress is almost impossible? Lol watch me.

[–] snowe@programming.dev 40 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Candle that never burns out means fire in a vacuum. Pretty powerful stuff.

[–] Evotech@lemmy.world 15 points 10 months ago

Huge scientific implications

[–] Devonian@lemmy.blahaj.zone 46 points 10 months ago (8 children)

favorite mug is the best for breaking the laws of physics and generating infinite energy - though the blanket and the candle also have infinite heat, the mug would be the most versatile, as you could fill it with a super-hot liquid, then treat it like an RTG, generating electricity from the temperature difference between the mug and its environment. use the mug as your spaceship's power supply, and you'll never even need big honkin photovoltaic panels !

I'm gonna need some more information on this memery.

What kind of memes do they produce there?

[–] HatchetHaro@lemmy.blahaj.zone 29 points 10 months ago (4 children)

the mug and candle are just free energy

[–] CluckN@lemmy.world 17 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Put Magma in the mug

Place the mug under a large water tank

Use it to spin a turbine

Attach alligator clips to my balls

Good old infinite energy

Fuck the rest that pillow is the only way to go. Dreaming means I hit REM every night which means I am better at most of the other times almost automatically

[–] ObsidianZed@lemmy.world 20 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

I will literally settle for just one quality of one of these. Give me the "perfect temperature blanket," I don't even care if it's soft or the right size. If it somehow stabilized my temperature so it didn't feel like it fluctuated 20⁰ every hour, I would sleep ~~like a baby~~

If not for the "almost", I'd have chosen the candle for sure, but as long as it's not COMPLETELY impossible, my ADHD/anxiety combo is GOING to find something to stress about.

So yeah, I'm going to go with the treasure stone and hope people don't get the wrong idea about me fiddling in my pocket at high pressure moments 😁

[–] dsco@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 10 months ago

Take the blanket, move to Antarctica with laptop and star link, never be bothered again.

[–] Jentu@lemmy.blahaj.zone 17 points 10 months ago (2 children)

If I was a fae creature, I'd get the endless candle so I could lure people to my hut in the forest and they would not get a sense of danger at all (assuming everyone around the candle can also feel the effects by smelling it)

Good dream pillow, basically doubling my percieved livespan, potentially more depending on how dream time relates to real life time.

The fact that the pillow won't help my awful insomnia (or help you fall asleep in general) makes it so close to being the best choice to me, but it falls short in the most frustrating way.

Damn, usually these challenges are pretty bad and there's only one or two good options so it makes choosing easier but this one is horrible becuase everything is amazing. I want it all!

bear and pillow seem to have the most utility -- having 100% good dreams must be incredibly blissful. but i do feel empty often as well

The pillow sounds like the ultimate psychodelic drug

[–] Th4tGuyII@kbin.social 12 points 10 months ago

The others have cool abilities, but I'd take the Treasure Stone - I'm anxious when it comes to confrontation and speaking, so something I could hold onto to make me more confident in myself would be a godsend.

[–] Rachelhazideas@lemmy.world 12 points 10 months ago (3 children)

Unspoken curses of each item:

Magic blanket - you will never get to taste a cold drink or feel a cool breeze again

Good dream pillow - you will be asleep every hour of sundown to sunrise

Cuddly bear - you will always feel empty when you are not hugging it

Endless candle - you will never feel stressed enough to feel the need to be productive again

Favorite mug - you will never get your hot drinks back

Treasure stone - you will progressively devolve into a narcissist the more you touch it

[–] dutchkimble@lemy.lol 14 points 10 months ago

You're just making the pillow even better

bear easily

[–] moonbunny@beehaw.org 9 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

treasure stone, because I struggle so much with self-esteem.

I almost chose the cuddly thing because sometimes social anxiety eats my insides and then I feel empty and need a friend to hug. But I also think that the treasure stone would help with that too because then I would be brave and more comfortable with being by myself for that moment.

[–] tamal3@lemmy.world 9 points 10 months ago

The pillow... Sleep is my nemesis.

Unless the blanket does away with menopausal hot flashes. I'm not near that age, but I dread them still.
