Representative Clay Higgins has taken Donald Trump and J.D. Vance’s threat against Haitian immigrants to the next level.

Republican Representative Clay Higgins made a racist attack on Haitians Wednesday, referencing several racist tropes and the debunked pet-eating conspiracy from Ohio.

In his post on X (formerly Twitter), the Louisiana congressman said, “These Haitians are wild. Eating pets, vudu, nastiest country in the western hemisphere, cults, slapstick gangsters … but damned if they don’t feel all sophisticated now, filing charges against our President and VP.”

Higgins was apparently upset that a Haitian American nonprofit organization took advantage of an Ohio law allowing citizens to file affidavits for criminal offenses, and filed charges against Donald Trump and J.D. Vance for spreading the debunked rumor that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, captured and ate pets, ducks, and geese.

Nice of them to keep going mask off in the last month.

The fact that their polls aren't tanking is a very bad sign for our democracy.

Yeah because it doesn't matter. Republicans are a coin flip to win the house, win the presidency, and are already likely to win the senate. Why would they stop being awful?

Moral consternation on the left doesn't change the fact that half the country appreciates and endorses this kind of rhetoric. And the party that makes these comments is quite possibly going to run all three branches of government in a few months and already run the Supreme Court.

We're losing. In many respects, we've already lost. We're just going to lose more.

Defeatism is the first step towards losing. Personally, even if you assume that will happen, I'd suggest looking up guns that use NATO standard ammunition and getting some practice in while you still can.

I disagree. We’re in a mass dying of euphemisms.

Eating pets, vudu, nastiest country in the western hemisphere, cults, slapstick gangsters...

That's literally Louisiana.

I wonder how much we could get if we sold it back to France?

We could keep nawleans though.

Grew up there, never moving back

With how hard Republicans project, I assume dog was served at the RNC.

Well, maybe at the after party. RFK was hosting,

our President and VP

Election isn’t until November, dumbass.

[–] ME5SENGER_24@lemmy.world 54 points 16 hours ago (5 children)

That’s the thing, they still don’t think he lost 4 years ago. In their minds, he’s still the president.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

Then he can't run again. They can't have that both ways without breaking the Constitution.

[–] Frozengyro@lemmy.world 46 points 16 hours ago

Then he shouldn't be running again. Not that it matters to them....

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 6 points 10 hours ago

Okay, well, Vance was never VP.

[–] Passerby6497@lemmy.world 19 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

That tracks, republicans have a long history of being wrong about easily verifiable facts.

[–] Myxomatosis@lemmy.world 12 points 15 hours ago

They have concepts of a plan of a president.

[–] Suavevillain@lemmy.world 56 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

The only thing Trump has done for Republicans is give them the confidence to be openly racist in public.

[–] frunch@lemmy.world 29 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

That's really all they ever wanted, seeing how ravenously they support him

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago

Oh, they fucking love not having to pretend to be decent human beings any more. As long as he enables that, he has their undying loyalty.

[–] Rapidcreek@lemmy.world 29 points 15 hours ago

"I can put up another controversial post tomorrow if you want me to. I mean, we do have freedom of speech. I’ll say what I want… It’s not a big deal to me. It’s like something stuck to the bottom of my boot. Just scrape it off and move on with my life.”

— Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA), quoted by CNN, digging in after deleting a post calling Haitian migrants “thugs” and “slapstick gangsters.”

[–] newthrowaway20@lemmy.world 35 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

These white, Republican congressmen are wild. Cocaine fueled bingers, sex trafficking, Christofascism. Rape and disease. Nastiest leaders in the free world. Cults, wannabe gangsters. But damn if they don't feel emboldened now, attacking anyone they can.

[–] Spitzspot@lemmings.world 44 points 17 hours ago (4 children)

Epic POS. Louisiana, do better.

[–] ThrowawayInTheYear23@lemmy.world 8 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

That would require resurrecting Sherman.

Who knew they also liked renting movies digitally?

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 12 points 15 hours ago (5 children)

The Venn Diagram of Racist and repubs would be a circle with a slightly smaller circle inside it.

Not all repubs are racist, but damn if all racists are repubs. And yes, libertarians are included as repubs

Weird racist motherfuckers. The entire lot.

[–] Theprogressivist@lemmy.world 18 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Surprised he didn't call them uppity. Racist pos.

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 9 points 10 hours ago

He did, in different words. Saying they "feel all sophisticated now" means the same thing.

[–] WhatYouNeed@lemmy.world 9 points 14 hours ago (3 children)

It's voodoo, not vudu, you ignorant fuck

[–] rsuri@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

And this guy is from Louisiana, supposedly.

[–] troybot@midwest.social 15 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Actually he's referring to Vudu, the movie streaming app.

[–] MegaUltraChicken@lemmy.world 12 points 13 hours ago

Those damn Haitians renting all the movies...

[–] Makeitstop@lemmy.world 12 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Actually, the Haitian version would be vodou. Voodoo is a related but distinct tradition that developed in the US.

[–] WhatYouNeed@lemmy.world 7 points 12 hours ago (1 children)
[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 5 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

You're both right and Higgins is the ignorant fuck. He was definitely referring to the US-developed tradition of voodoo, which is derived from vodou but not the same thing.
