Barbie and Baldur's Gate 3 have undeniably progressive elements and are unstoppable money-making machines.

That needed to be explained? We needed an entire article to talk about how right-wing bullshit is... actually bullshit?

[–] Kolanaki@yiffit.net 51 points 1 year ago (2 children)

It's for people who do actually believe this nonsense. Not that they'll accept it.

[–] p03locke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 28 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Right, they won't read it. Why bother trying to "convince" them? They have years of practice playing trolls, and deflecting every argument that doesn't agree with their shitty worldview.

[–] GunnarRunnar@kbin.social 23 points 1 year ago

At worst this doesn't convert anyone. Then you can count up from there. And it also vocalizes support, which might come across as pandering but that's about it.

I'm don't to see how this article is bad for anyone. At most, mildly annoying because "we knew that already".

[–] Balios@kbin.social 15 points 1 year ago

For those on a dangerous path, that have not yet arrived.

[–] Kichae@kbin.social 11 points 1 year ago

Not opposing them does less than nothing. They see lack of vocal opposition as agreement, so disagreeing with them means being proactive and vocal.

[–] starlinguk@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

Nobody believes it, though. People and companies that say such stuff want an excuse to be bigots.

[–] minkshaman@lemmy.perthchat.org 75 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What’s hilarious/infuriating about this stuff is that when it’s done poorly, it falls over by itself.

Then it gets called out with cries of “go woke, go broke”, when in reality it’s closer to “make shit, get hit”.

[–] Crismus@lemmynsfw.com 7 points 1 year ago

It's always been about the stories being garbage.

I swear Disney hires writers who can't write, which is their problem. Not to mention writing a movie as it goes leads to major mistakes. The whole woke idea is a smokescreen.

[–] MJBrune@beehaw.org 54 points 1 year ago (1 children)

As much as "go woke, go broke" has become common wisdom among right-wingers, shows of progressivism are only damaging in cases where the product's base skews conservative and where there are plentiful other options.

Yeah, I mean of course. the whole article can boil down to this one line. Conservatives weren't going to watch Barbie or play BG3 to start with. They will however watch nascar and drink beer. However, Nascar can go woke all it wants because there is no alternative.

[–] VikingHippie@lemmy.wtf 21 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, having progressive elements in a game or movie meant mainly for conservatives is like a pickup truck that only comes in pink or this flag:

[–] Revan343@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'd love that pickup truck

[–] VikingHippie@lemmy.wtf 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ok, bad example since, unlike the traitor flag, pick up trucks are used by lots of non-bigoted people 😁

It does sort of make me dream of a federation of ancom communities, but I like to do that anyhow...

Not sure if it still holds now that most people will stumble upon the history of the confederate flag and how it has been flown since in the US, but as an 80s Eurokiddy, back in the day when we were even more clueless than we are now - it just had some vague "rebel" association. Then people started reading stuff, clued the rest of us in about what it actually represents (inadvertently prodding us out of clueless enthusiasm & into some circumspection), but it took time for that message to get heard enough for the flag to vanish from circles who'd never had flown it had they known.

Anyhow, loathe this version for drawing false equivalences, yet find it grossly fascinating for how it obliquely manifests so many truths about our society under Capitalism.

We're long accustomed to the commodification of causes & the trivialisation of same, but one can look on this and see, endless tidy light grey boxes lit with rows of long lights posed as unflickering mimics of fluorescent tubes, chewing time to unfold tidy folded wraps of glossy paper, encapsulating shine-worn gloss of ticket home (&back) on hard-lit long trains ticking & tilting bright-lit to aching, fretful sweat sotted beds, unfurling blankets... but, for now must choose. By committee.

Or, they laid off 70% of their workers, one of the remainder prompted a chatbot to provide an icon which would "appeal to all Americans" & here we are discussing it, giving them free publicity & putting the pandering fucks at the head of our mind.

Bollocks, have rambled & clean forgotten what I was trying to say. Apologies.

Is Baldurs Gate 3 considered Woke? Why?

Is it the bear fucking? It's the bear fucking, isn't it?

[–] VikingHippie@lemmy.wtf 15 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Maybe the fact that several characters are canonically not straight including

minor spoilerThe daughter of a benevolent god

[–] Faydaikin@beehaw.org 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

I am quite aware of that. My current Char is in a homosexual relationship.

My comment was supposed to be a humorous jab at the fact that BG3s romances go way further than same-sex relations.

[–] SkyeStarfall@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's not just your companions, which could have been seen as just being "player-sexual", but also NPC characters in relationship with other NPC characters, which are more direct statements.

[–] Faydaikin@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago
[–] VikingHippie@lemmy.wtf 1 points 1 year ago

Ah ok, cool. Difficult to discern facetiousness online sometimes 😁

[–] stopthatgirl7@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If you open the article and read it, it will answer your question!

[–] Faydaikin@beehaw.org 9 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The question was intended to be slightly humorous.

Someone got a stick up their ass about all the companion characters exposing their desire for the protagonist. Yeah, I saw it. I don't think there's anything wrong the freedom of choice. Although I do agree the implementation of the romance options is a bit heavy handed.

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well that and you can roll an elf girl with a massive donger if you want.

[–] Faydaikin@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

I'm pretty sure I've met someone like that in real life

[–] Iwasondigg@lemmy.one 31 points 1 year ago

My character on Baldurs Gate 3 is named Kenough.

[–] circularfish@beehaw.org 17 points 1 year ago

I would certainly pay to see a Karlach/Barbie crossover.

[–] Zeroxxx@lemmy.my.id 3 points 1 year ago (7 children)

So that is two, what else? Out of plethora of go woke go broke examples.

Lmao.

Fasch's ankles as they trip over themselves crying about wokeness

[–] SuperSaiyanSwag@lemmy.zip 26 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What HAS gone broke because of “wokeness”? Mario movie was woke, until it wasn’t. Street Fighter 6 was woke until it wasn’t. RE4 Remake was woke until it wasn’t. Then we have examples where things were bad without any “wokeness”, but right wingers latched on to that anyway, like Battlefield V (1 falls under “woke until it wasn’t”).

[–] MJBrune@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Bud Light is the example they give in the article. It still hasn't recovered on the stocks.

[–] FfaerieOxide@kbin.social 12 points 1 year ago

Because they punished the executives who talked to a trans woman and now neither side will claim the swill.

That's a lesson in waffling, not political correctness.

Was probably aided by being a shit beer

[–] irmoz@reddthat.com 12 points 1 year ago
[–] lukini@beehaw.org 11 points 1 year ago

I like how you were asked for examples multiple times and then didn't provide them.

[–] FarceMultiplier@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Name even 3 of that plethora.

[–] burningmatches 7 points 1 year ago

To be fair, it’s easy to make up examples that fit the anti-woke trope — just name any movie, game or TV show with strong female/non-straight/minority characters that didn’t achieve record sales. That Scooby-Doo show, She Hulk, the Cleopatra thing, etc.

[–] thoro@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 year ago

The Last of Us?

Zeroxxx

Btw, great choice of icon for the link! Gotta love Karlach ❤️

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

They were going woke, because it kept them from going broke, silly Right Wingers.
