Officials said the IDF was backing efforts to increase coordination and cooperation with the PA on the orders of the government rather than as its own initiative, despite statements from some government ministers who have urged the weakening of the PA.

The comment comes as PA security forces have been carrying out an operation against terror groups in the northern West Bank city of Jenin, including killing and detaining members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, seizing weapons, and neutralizing explosive devices.

“In 2024, Israel’s genocidal campaign against Palestinians in Gaza reached catastrophic proportions. Relentless aerial bombardments, ground invasions, and siege tactics deliberately targeted Palestinian civilians, leaving children to suffer the most,” DCIP’s report says.

The number of Palestinian children detained in Israeli prisons also reached a record high in 2024, the group said.

In the occupied West Bank, Israeli soldiers and settlers killed one Palestinian child every four days this year, “an escalation made possible by decades of impunity,” the group said.

Israel’s violence included using children as human shields “systematically” this year, as DCIP has documented throughout the genocide.

This includes an incident in March in which Israeli tanks surrounded a group of Palestinian children waiting in line for aid in Gaza City. Soldiers stripped the children and tied them up, depriving them of food and water and forcing them for an entire day to walk in front of tanks and in front of buildings that the military wanted to enter, as DCIP found.

Israeli forces’ weaponization of starvation, meanwhile, has put children, especially newborns and children with disabilities, at heightened risk, with babies as young as two months old starving to death, the group said; in August, Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor found that Israel killed 210 newborn babies a month on average in Gaza since the beginning of the genocide.

"Repeated Israeli military attacks on Palestinian civilians over the last 14 months, the dismantling of the health care system and other essential infrastructure, the suffocating siege, and the systematic denial of humanitarian assistance are destroying the conditions of life in Gaza, Palestine, according to a new Médecins Sans Frontières (#MSF) report... MSF is urgently calling on all parties, once again, for an immediate ceasefire to save lives and enable the flow of humanitarian aid. Israel must stop its targeted and indiscriminate attacks against civilians, and its allies must act without delay to protect the lives of Palestinians and uphold the rules of war."

We speak with the husband and sister of Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi, the 26-year-old Turkish American activist killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank in September, who have criticized the Biden administration for failing to independently investigate her death. The recent University of Washington graduate was fatally shot in the head after taking part in a weekly protest against illegal Israeli settlements in the town of Beita, which she attended as an international observer. Witnesses say she was shot by an Israeli sniper after the demonstration had already dispersed. Members of Eygi’s family spoke with Secretary of State Antony Blinken earlier this week but left the meeting with little hope the U.S. would hold Israel accountable. “Accountability starts with an investigation by the U.S. of the killing of one of its own citizens by an ally,” says Eygi’s husband Hamid Ali. “The answer to the question of why my wife is not getting justice is because Israel enjoys this level of impunity throughout its existence that no other country, no other state in the world enjoys.”

"The UK is directly aiding and abetting these atrocities, providing Israel with material support at a time when the ICC has arrest warrants out for two of its leaders.”

Khem Rogaly, who is researching British military involvement in the war on Gaza, highlighted US military cargo and British spy plane flights from UK airbases in Cyprus, as well as the British-made components in Israel’s F-35 jets and British participation in the defence of Israel.

“This is not only about arms export licenses - but active collaboration, logistical support, supplies and supporting missions that have been ongoing for 14 months,” Rogaly said.

“This means Britain is not only failing in its third-party obligations under international law but are longstanding active participants in the crimes outlined today.”

And so the Palestinians from northern Gaza speaking in London - either in person or on video - were doing so in the knowledge that Israel was attacking them and their families with the help of Britain, even while the British government continues to call for a ceasefire.

———

“According to a new assessment by the Education Cluster, which relies on satellite imagery collected on 1 December 2024, nearly 88 per cent of school buildings in the Gaza Strip (496 out of 564) have been directly hit or damaged and are currently estimated to require either full reconstruction or major rehabilitation work to be functional again. Fifty-five per cent of these schools (275) are government schools, a third (161) are UNRWA schools, and 12 per cent (57) are private schools. … Prior to the war, ‘direct hit’ or ‘damaged’ schools served about 542,959 students and had more than 20,320 teachers…”

Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas has been trying to stay relevant as events in Gaza, the West Bank and across the region have been moving at a much faster pace than the octogenarian politician is able to cope with.

This week, amid an Israeli genocide that has been unceasingly raging in Gaza for 14 months, Abbas's security forces brazenly killed several prominent resistance fighters in Jenin in an attempt to appease the Israelis and their American benefactors.

This was followed by a deal the Egyptians struck two weeks ago between Hamas and Fatah, the Palestinian faction headed by Abbas. The agreement was to appoint an independent committee of prominent and professional Palestinians in Gaza to run its affairs and reconstruction after the war.

It was a demand by the Zionist regime and the Biden administration in order to dislodge Hamas from any future role in ruling Gaza.

However, Abbas's Fatah quickly retracted its approval as the Israelis rejected any role for or input from Hamas in the future of Gaza. It seems that such a deal would not play well in Netanyahu's vow for a "total victory" over Hamas and the resistance.

Before he was appointed as a prime minister in 2003 as a result of American and European pressures, Abbas was publicly ridiculed by Arafat, who called him the "Karzai of Palestine", a reference to Hamid Karzai, the former Afghan president, who was widely considered in the Arab world as a US puppet.

Victoria will legislate to ‘thwart’ protests at places of worship while banning masks and flags (Guardian, 2024-12-17)

"The Victorian government’s proposed crackdown on protests has been criticised as a severe limitation on the right to participate in demonstrations, despite being backed by some Jewish groups.

"The Allan government on Tuesday announced protesting could be banned outside places of worship – while face masks and certain flags could be prohibited at other demonstrations – under proposed legislation announced in response to an arson attack on a Melbourne synagogue.

"The premier ... announced a suite of legislative proposals to crack down on what she said was antisemitism and extremism at protests. This included a ban on the flags of listed terrorist organisations including Hamas, Hezbollah and white nationalist extremist groups."

Gaza and the matter of genocide (ECCHR = European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights, 2024-12-10)

https://www.ecchr.eu/en/press-release/gaza-and-the-matter-of-genocide/
------

"In recent months, ECCHR has been conducting independent research and analysis on the topic of genocide, and analyzing this against the available information and evidence relating to Israel’s actions in Gaza. This process has led us to the conclusion that there is a legally sound argument that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza..."

Even in Germany many jurists and human rights experts come to the same conclusion as Amnesty International (#ECCHR is a Registered Association based in Berlin). T^T

There’s fighting in the Jenin refugee camp between Palestinian Authority (PA) forces, who have raided the camp, and Jenin Brigades fighters.

After five days of surrounding the Jenin refugee camp, PA forces raided it, exchanging fire with Jenin Brigades fighters.

The PA killed a Jenin Brigades commander named Yazid Ja’ayseh and injured several people.

The PA also killed 19-year-old Palestinian Rahbi Shalabi during clashes with fighters in Jenin.

The camp has been a stronghold for armed groups opposing Israel’s occupation for decades, giving it that special place in many hearts and minds.

It has also seen increasing crackdowns by Israeli forces and now the PA, which is involved in security coordination with Israel.

Israel launched a major 10-day operation in the camp and other sites in August, killing and wounding dozens.

Yasser Arafat is the most controversial Palestinian in history. But you can’t understand the Palestinian fight for freedom unfolding all around us, without understanding the man who built it for half a century.

So who was he?

How did his strengths and flaws as a person contribute to the greatest achievements and failures of the Palestinian movement?

And why is his legacy so controversial?

For Said, humanism was a worldliness, a recognition (born from and shared with one of his great heroes, Giambattista Vico) that history, as something human beings made, was something they could understand and which they ought to claim responsibility for if they want it to be something else.

By almost every metric, the harm to civilians from the first month of the Israeli campaign in Gaza is incomparable with any 21st century air campaign. It is by far the most intense, destructive, and fatal conflict for civilians that Airwars has ever documented. Key findings include:

  • At least 5,139 civilians were killed in Gaza in 25 days in October 2023. This is nearly four times more civilians reported killed in a single month than in any conflict Airwars has documented since it was established in 2014.

  • In October 2023 alone, Airwars documented at least 65 incidents in which a minimum of 20 civilians were killed in a particular incident. This is nearly triple the number of such high-fatality incidents that Airwars has documented within any comparable timeframe.

  • Over the course of 25 days, Airwars recorded a minimum of 1,900 children killed by Israeli military action in Gaza. This is nearly seven times higher than even the most deadly month for children previously recorded by Airwars.

  • Families were killed together in unprecedented numbers, and in their homes. More than nine out of ten women and children were killed in residential buildings. In more than 95 percent of all cases where a woman was killed, at least one child was also killed.

  • On average, when civilians were killed alongside family members, at least 15 family members were killed. This is higher than any other conflict documented by Airwars.
