Personally I believe that it'll make people associate the Fediverse with Threads, which is not a good thing. Edit: It'll replace their definition of the Fediverse, with Threads, and people may widely forget about Mastodon, Lemmy, Kbin etc.

The youtube comments can be a very toxic place but if you know where to look there are also very wholesome communities.

Unless you happen to stumble upon a site/group that runs a Discord channel, it can be hard to find good ones (though I suppose that's down to what you're looking for).

Does anyone here have any favorite Discord channels they can share/recommend?

Like say for example I wanted a cool icon for my kbin/lemmy community.

I used the Reddit forhire sub in the past but it seems less active nowadays.. plus it's Reddit..

And I've used fiverr before but it seems better suited for having a cool artwork made than for webdesign or something highly specific due to the language barrier.

Those of you among us who remember that Don Imus used to be a thing, why was he so influential and how did he slip completely from memory?

When I go to https://kbin.social/sub it shows me posts from magazines that I am not subscribed to. Is there a way for me to fix this, or is it something that needs to be fixed site-wide?

Cybersecurity employee training that includes chatbots? I know, I know. I should ask this in technology or something but what im really looking for is more business related. Im looking for those duh, duh, kind of employee training but updated with the dangers of chatbots. Things like don't paste in private or confidential data, don't trust its answers are right, ask questions generally and move down to specifics, etc. etc. And yes I did ask a chatbot for the answer.

We all either love horror films, or hate horror films. What's that film that kept you up at night? The one that you re-watch all the time? The one that made you groan at 'the big reveal'?

Favourite: Evil Dead (2013). It was just insane, wonderfully gory and made you wanna squirm.

Least favourite: Sharkenstein (2016). Watching this film, I gained a new appreciation for Meet The Spartans.

Whenever I post something to kbin it just shows up under the microblogging section of that magazine It doesn’t show up as a thread.

Is this even possible from mastodon?

cross-posted from: https://jemmy.jeena.net/post/26055

I have the feeling that people in the Threadyverse are on average younger than on Mastodon.

My assumption is:

  • Mastodon: 30 - 45
  • Lemmy, /kbin: 25 - 40

There are polls like that on Mastodon whichvpoint to that, but I haven't seen any on the Threadyverse.

I'm getting really tired of trying to run away from big tech, only to be ensnared again by the greed and/or naivety of sites who ultimately cave to the whims of big tech.

Mastodon has already caved, and the silence of lemmy's and kbin's developers over this matter isn't exactly reassuring. Since I more or less still have my bags packed from leaving reddit, what are some other communities I could try that would be more resilient to corporate encroachment?

262

Apologies if I missed one that has already been held. But I saw a member census of beehaw, which was really interesting. I'm not suggesting gathering of any personally identifying info, but more generally getting a sense of who is here on kbin.

Hi, can you help me with a math problem kbin? It's algebra, and it's been a long time since I've had to do it. Can you explain to me how simplifying the terms comes out to 9/2 in the pictured equation please?

And I don't know how to change it back since I don't know polish!

My room feels cluttered all the time, and I'm wondering what would be a good way to try and make some space.

I don't consider myself a particularly messy person, it's mostly just an assortment of random items on my dressers, cables, etc that I just can't seem to find the right spots for.

I.E. a way to legally enforce that servers which federate with you are not allowed to serve ads alongside content from your server, and must be run by not-for-profit entities?

I'm curious about some sort of strategy that blocks Meta from extracting money from the content creators in the current fediverse by using legal licensing of some sort, similar to how the GPL software license requires any derivative software to be open source.

267

I heard it's already launched, is it true?

Yeah, I'm aware it's from Meta so automatically it's going to be hated by people from Fediverse... But I think it's not fair to judge something until we try it directly.

I'm particularly interested in the ActivityPub compatibility, but it's seems like it's not going to be enabled on launch? Can anyone confirm?

NGL, my expectation is very low from this app. The fact that it's not going to be released in EU is very alarming, hmm. Meta isn't known for respecting user's privacy...

268

I've noticed that if I go to my subscriptions page I don't see any of the magazines I've subscribed to that are off-site (for example, beehaw.org posts and articles)

Is this intended? Is there a better way to see all my subscribed feeds?

269

Seemed like emojis in posts / comments would get downvoted to oblivion on Reddit. I don’t see the same thing on Kbin (or other instances / services).

270

I've been exploring the Fediverse for a bit, and I really like that different instances can interact with each other. But that also leads to some oddities, like how the culture on each instance treats anonymity.

On Reddit, most accounts were anonymous. Personally I always tried to keep any personally identifying information to a minimum.

On Twitter, many accounts are just [Firstname][Lastname], in fact many of the accounts I follow are because of who they are IRL.

In the Fediverse, these different cultures can interact with one another. Kbin users can interact with Mastodon users, etc. I'm just wondering how Kbin users feel about anonymity. Would you be distrustful of an anonymous user? Would you avoid posting personal information incase of doxxing?

271

Not that I’m complaining; nice to not be inundated with beans.

I’d assume with federation the active posts would mostly be the same on both.

Edit: I think it may partly have to do with how voting works differently between Lemmy and Kbin.

272

If you're like me and have auto load media turned on, you may find that when you go 'back' you end up at the end of the page since the images aren't cached.

An easy workaround is to get in the habit of long pressing and choosing 'open in Chrome'

When you click back, the Chrome session ends and you're back in the PWA where you were before.

273

Since I'm having difficulty clicking links to get to lemmy stuff and usually get a kbin 404, what are your favorite non meme kbin zines.

274

I've noticed that some comments on threads will have a red, dotted line next to them, almost like it's the color coding for child comments, but it shows up occasionally on a top-level comment which has no parent comment. I've tried looking at the accounts where I see this, but I can't find any patterns for it yet, myself. Any ideas what this is?
